Everything You Need To Know About Apple AirPort Line Of Products

As of publication, Apple offers three different AirPort wireless routers. AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule all provide both wired and wireless networking capabilities, while some also offer unique additional features. While they are made by Apple and are designed to work with Apple computers, tablets and devices, they also work with other operating systems and non-Apple mobile devices.

Common Features

All Apple AirPort shares some common relatively high-end device features. As of publication, they all support Wireless-N networking at speeds as high as 300 Mbps or megabits per second. Apple also builds dual-band radios on all AirPort routers, allowing you to use both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz bands. Each AirPort router supports up to 50 users on both local and guest networks and can function as a print server for a connected USB printer.

AirPort Express

AirPort Express is Apple's smaller and less expensive offering. In addition to sharing a wireless internet connection, it can also support up to two wired devices at speeds up to 100 Mbps. You can also use AirPort Express as a network range extender that works through an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule router. Unlike other airport devices, the Express also serves as an AirPlay device, allowing you to connect a pair of speakers to it and send it via music to iTunes.

AirPort Extreme

AirPort Extreme is the top-of-the-line router for Apple's network only. In addition to Wireless-N, it also supports Wireless-AC connections, which can be as fast as 1.3 Gbps. The wired router portion of Extreme includes four ports that support Gigabit Ethernet speeds. Your USB port shares hard drives as well as printers, allowing you to turn it into a Network Attached Storage or NAS device.

Time Capsule

Time Capsule is similar to AirPort Extreme, but with two fundamental differences. First, it can also serve as a range extender for a network organized by another Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme router. Second, in addition to being able to serve as a NAS with a drive attached, it also has a built-in hard disk drive of up to 3 TB. While any computer on your network should be able to access your files, OS X computers that connect to it can use it for automatic backups with Apple Time Capsule software.

Now that you know the details of all the AirPort versions that were launched by Apple, you can choose as to which AirPort product you can get, although, you will get a used product because the company has discontinued AirPort line of products a few months back.
